Molten High: A Contemporary Expression of Traditional Pottery

Bringing Art and Architecture Together in a Multi-Storey Residential Building

Inspired by the rich pottery tradition of a Tier 2 town in India, Prashant Chauhan's Molten High is a stunning expression of art and architecture. This unique residential building combines the beauty of traditional craftsmanship with modern design elements, creating a harmonious blend of past and present.

Located in the heart of a hot and dry town, Molten High pays homage to the traditional profession of pottery that once thrived in the area. The design concept takes inspiration from the process of clay containers being deformed and transformed during their creation, resulting in a building that resembles a molten masterpiece.

One of the standout features of Molten High is the parametric skin on the southwest staircase. This innovative design element not only adds visual interest to the building but also serves a practical purpose. The parametric skin allows filtered light and ventilation to enter the staircase, creating a refreshing and inviting atmosphere.

What sets Molten High apart from other residential buildings is its use of recycled plastic ribs to achieve the molten look of the facade. This sustainable approach not only adds a unique texture to the building but also showcases the designer's commitment to environmental consciousness.

The building itself stands at an impressive 20 meters wide, 4 meters deep, and reaches a height of 50 meters. Its sleek and refined array of windows and balconies provide residents with breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape, while the parametric skin adds a touch of artistic flair.

Throughout the design process, Prashant Chauhan and his team meticulously studied the site context to ensure that Molten High effectively communicates the town's pottery art to an international audience. By magnifying and interpreting the traditional profession in a modern and contemporary manner, the building serves as a testament to the town's rich cultural heritage.

Overcoming the challenge of translating a local craft onto an international podium, Molten High succeeds in capturing the essence of pottery in a visually striking and innovative way. The complex geometry and future technology of Cad Cam designs used in the parametric skin further enhance the building's artistic appeal.

Currently under construction, Molten High is set to become a landmark in the town, showcasing the seamless integration of art and architecture. Prashant Chauhan's vision and creativity have earned him the prestigious Iron A' Design Award in 2021, recognizing the building's well-designed, practical, and innovative nature.

As Molten High nears completion, it stands as a testament to the power of design to transform traditional crafts into contemporary masterpieces. This architectural marvel not only pays homage to the town's rich heritage but also serves as a symbol of innovation and creativity in the field of design.
